Recentely in English class we had such a debate question, and I want to know what you all think about this.
To change yourself, the society, or your surroundings, is to simply run away from your problems.
Do you agree with that? Or do you think we should face the problems instead?
I hope this is a debatable topic.

Don't we face the problems by changing society, ourselves and our surroundings?
May 22, 2008 4:35 PM #139677
However, don't we "run away" sometimes for some peacefulness and personal space for ourselves?

I don't think people can be blamed for running away sometimes. If they do it constantly it becomes a problem, but taking breaks occasionally is not only acceptable, its healthy.

Yes true.
Yet, what kind of situations will people choose to escape rather than facing it? Perhaps love? War?

Depends on the person really. But I guess someone could run away from both.

I don't really agree with this. To change yourself you must face your problems head on. You learn new things and therefore, are changing yourself. And you sorta can change your society by running away from them. If you leave, the people who knew you will probably get used to you not being around, and you've just changed your society. Slowly but surely.Quote from NaglfarRecentely in English class we had such a debate question, and I want to know what you all think about this.

I believe people can't change simply because they want to.

It's not simply to run away from your problems. Some people, like me, just get bored. Although, I have made big changes to run away from my problems before.

I don't know if any of you know the movie "Into the wild".
The main character in it tried to run away from his family, his society.(Sometimes noted as running towards his dreams)
He thinks he could search real happiness like that.
However, after a few months in the wild, and meeting some new friends, he started to learn how to forgive, and how to love.. He also realised that happiness only exists when it is SHARED..
He ran away, but didn't he change himself in the end by doing so?

There wasn't a problem with him necessarily. Just his perspective on the subject. And that journey of him running away helped him learn that, so I don't see your point.

Which means if he didn't run away, he will not learn it? =/

Interesting question.
How exactly is changing yourself a means of running away from your problems? Changing yourself, and gaining a new perspective on things is a very difficult thing to do, if anything I would consider it a means of facing and overcoming problems.
Or changing society for that matter. How is changing society running away from problems, isn't it the exact opposite? If people never tried to change society we might still be under the control of monarchies. None of the worlds most important revolutions would've ever happened. Weren't these revolutions a means of facing problems and changing them on a massive scale?
I don't understand how else you figure people should face their problems. Could you elaborate on your viewpoint here?

It is pretty hard to change. And running away from your problems makes a heap of them. When that heap is overfilled, you might get thoughts about suicide.
And this might resolve into suicide.
So I think you should fight against a few of your problems, and save your breath for the bigger ones

Yes, suicidals are people who couldn't stand the pressure of facing the problems.
The problem is.
The society is huge. Like me, I am basically a nobody in this whole society..
What impacts would I cause if I start to fight back? Start a protest?
Like the protest in Tibet, it ultimately failed, in a result of dead people..
If you want to fight against the society, don't you need fame? Don't you need to be a Somebody?
And sometimes when you "run away" from your problems, and give yourself some personal space.. Won't you change your thoughts sometimes? And choose to accept?
On the other hand, if you try to fight back to problem, knowing that you couldn't do anything..
Won't that be in a state of helplessness? Won't you become more angry and aggressive against the society?
I want to know your thoughts. :)
