There's not many good metal bands imo. I get no satisfaction from knowing that growling is very hard to learn. It still sounds ugly, almost 100% of the times. Most metal bands are, as the Pirate already said, extremely monotone. Heavily distorted guitars over badly progressed chords and sixteenths on the bass drum just doesn't sound good in my ears.
There are some good metal bands though, you should check out Meshuggah, especially since you're a drummer. They are really extremely talented, using a lot of polyrythm and really cool time signatures.

Yeah, I've heard of them, but never really tried listening to them. Will listen to that once I get back from the dentist =[

Cant believe I only found this thread just now...
Im a purist metal head, and have had long hair since I was in like grade 5. Anyways, as for great bands, Lamb of God and Metallica are probably my 2 biggest. But I essentially like everything. Slipknot is a good band, Dimmu Borgir, Cryptopsy, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Cannibal Corpse, Mayhem, At the Gates, Dark Tranquility, Carcass, In Flames, Deicide, Rotting Christ, Cradle of Filth etc etc etc...
As for song recommendations, Black Label by Lamb of God, Lord Abortion by Cradle of Filth, Incarnated Solvent Abuse by Carcass. Far from any of my favourite songs but just some stuff I really like recently. I'll post some more later.

Cool.
The band are like, off the top of my head is:
Alice In Chains
As I Lying Dying
Atreyu
Avenged Sevenfold
Bring Me The Horrizon
Children Of Bodom
Cradle Of Filth
Divine Heresy
Escape The Fate
Job For A Cowboy
Killswitch Engage
Korn
Lamb Of God
Metalica
Norma Jean
Remenstein
Slipknot
System Of A Down
Trivium
I got so many heros in the metal genre that I look up to.
Chris Adler of Lamb of God. He's so insane on the drums, and original. Joey Jordison for crazy double bass abilities on the drums. Oliver Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon for his kickass vocals. Travis Smith of Trivium. Damn, so much more.
Most importantly: TIM YEUNG! Fastest drummer alive who mastered speed drumming.

yea I ****ing love Chris Adler and Joey Jordinson. Joey is so fast on the double bass its practically mind numbing, as seen here:

Another incredible drummer though, is Flo Mounier from Cryptopsy. I mean this is just nuts:

Also, another good band is Nile. Listen to "Annihilation of the Wicked" and "Lashed to the Slave Stick", 2 really awesome songs.
