Hi, I'm Stickly
I live in Alaska.

Feel free to ask questions!

To the Alaskan: as a person who lives in a continuously cold country, do normal climates cause you to perspire and feel uneasy even if it's just normal for everyone else?

Quote from HewittTo the australians, why are ya'll presumably stereotypically racist? And if anything, why the chinese specifically? What's the real situation anyway.
I don't actually feel like Australia is a racist country but we are definitely prejudice for a reason that escapes me, I also think its not just the Chinese but all Asians and Muslims too. I can say that we might act like this because of the whole 'White Australia' thing or even fighting the Japs in ww2, but I think its more because there is a 'you live in Australia so you act Australian' mentality and when we see one person not complying it must mean none of them are. Its also probably just bogans venting their frustration at their shitty lives onto a minority as well.

I'm Korean but living in Colorado. I've pretty much grown in America my whole life though.
Even as a Korean myself, I have no idea why every Korean movie needs to have someone get hit by a car and/or someone die from cancer. I think we're all sadistic deep down and we just don't know it.
Quote from HewittI have a question about Koreans. Why are most if not all your movies whether it be Action, Horror, or Drama always so melancholic? Why are your endings always so bittersweet and tragic?

Quote from RaptorHey. We have our fair share of light-hearted comedies too you know. Watch Hello Ghost, that's a good one. I don't know how many Korean movies you saw, but I do know Drama and Romance are very popular genres in Korea. Soap Opera's for example are huge here. I suppose it's just a preference thing.
Sorry, I should rephrase the question. Korean films have this certain kind of inherent sadness whenever it shows any dramatic scene. In the same way that HK action, comedy, or action/comedy 90s films were so over-the-top in sight gags and slapstick humor, Korean film has this kind of crippling melancholic "ME FEELS" drama that seeps through regardless of genre.
Take for example He's on Duty
Comedy film. It's about an unemployed doofus who tried passing off as a Bhutan to be employed. It's rife with comedy and even slight romance (he falls for a non-korean girl in his place of work and becomes torn about revealing his true nature) and in the end, the knife is twisted: they dont get to be together and he goes on the run.
Another example A Friend in Need
This is a mystery drama about a longtime childhood best friend who kills the main character's troubles in life because they made a pact in the past. The ending Reveal itself was cliche: that there was no friend (he died when they were kids) and he was a schizo, but the real truth about the childhood friend was incredibly heart-tugging sad: in his attempts to save a prized action figure from a flock of bullies, he lept into a ditch when they threw the toy and he died. I mean, what. That's soooo fucking sad. It was really unnecessary to put that in plotwise. Also when the cops confronted the guy/killer for his mental troubles, he jumps off a building and the film just ends. What.
My question is thus: What is the root of this cultural tragic melancholy?
Quote from McRhookEven as a Korean myself, I have no idea why every Korean movie needs to have someone get hit by a car and/or someone die from cancer. I think we're all sadistic deep down and we just don't know it.
^This is what I meant, Raptor. See, even McRhook is unaware of why his culture is so masochistic to his own race.

So even now you yourself feel this 'herd mentality' of prejudice around you. Is there any mention of this attitude in your history classes? Oh and are like the new generation of australians still as prejudiced. I mean, it is your huge island. It's not like that's going to change in a million years.

The only racist people in Australia are the ones with low intelligence and some really old people who are probably effected by the various wars and policies of the past. I feel as though the current emerging generation is almost entirely non racist (bar maybe some dumbass teenage high school kids). It's no different to America.
Chinese people aren't really discriminated against all that much these days. Usually it's just a joke about their tendencies to be good at maths ect.
The biggest case of racism in Australia is with the Aboriginals. Why you ask? Because quite frankly, almost every time you see one, they are up to something illegal (and that's not an exaggeration). So to be honest, that's their problem for ruining the perception of their nationality. I will never use university parking because the security is useless, and practically every day someone is getting their car broken into by the local indigenous teens.

Oh okay. I ask because I had a chinese friend like 10 years ago who went there to study for a college and he told us about his rough first year I forgot about the specifics of it but glad he pulled himself together and got used to it.

That's weird because pretty much 60% of the people at my university are Chinese (or other countries like Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia ect). And I have never heard anyone being racist to them, ever. We're all friends and get along perfectly. Plus, who doesn't like seeing cute Chinese girls everywhere.
If you're from Asia living in Australia, I would imagine university is like one of the most friendly environments you could possibly be in.

Read some of these posts for a laugh. Also several cases of people constantly having their cars broken into.

Well, that's a bit obvious isn't it? I've only been on 3 vacations to places like california, vegas, and a cruise to panama. All I felt were extremely hot, I almost died haha!
Also, Alaska's a state bro.
