It's pretty heavy, a little depressing, and there are like a billion sex scenes. It's a fantastic concept and its really well done. The director categorizes it as a psychedelic melodrama and has an explanation in some interview he had.

it would actually be a fantastic movie to watch while on acid, since the whole movie is in first person. It starts out with the guy actually doing some psychedelic drugs and you see all the shit that he sees, then he dies, and you float around Tokyo at night, still in first person.

The only thing is it has some pretty scary shit, and you'd definitely have a bad trip if you watched it. I was freaking out at parts when I wasn't even high.

The beginning credits are fucking insane too, imagine seeing this in a movie theater.
