I guess it depends on the environment you grew up in. Our highschool/gradeschool was an all-boys christian school in a very competitive environment (like 40 students in 1 class). I distinctly remember, being called gay because I was the weird kid and socially awkward at that (only child for 10 years). Like there were some distinctly gay people in our school, but I was being called gay nonetheless. It was like gay became the automatic slander term for loser and if you were a gay loser well you were pretty much an outcast. Lower than the emos and the nerds and the student council (top of the chain).

The funny thing is that when we all headed out into the world for different colleges, that's when a majority of us just came out. Like about 30 (and still counting to this day) that we never thought would turn just suddenly became gay like wtf. I guess living in the previous environment for 15 years made the best of us repress it coz they were afraid of being a loser.

Most of the gay people in our batch were originally Student Council. Irony.
