I actually felt this same way back when I rejected 1080p and HD. Being content with what I had, I figured I'd never need to upgrade. It wasn't until I went to my sister's house and saw her 46-inch 1080p TV that I was really blown away. The difference is like night and day, and I didn't need to have them both in front of me. At that size, the 1080p was very noticeable, especially for little details, even though I had nothing immediate to compare it to.
For example, when I watched Back to the Future on DVD, I couldn't see some of the details on the faces of the actors. In 1080p, you can see all this weird shit on Mr. Strickland's neck:

I'd imagine if I saw that same movie on an 86-inch screen in 4k format, it would either be much smoother like it was rendered with vectors, and/or much more detailed like being able to see skin texture clearly or what have you.
