"So... how long have you been in DC?" The man glanced in the rear-view mirror as he continued driving, a grin showing up on his face. The guy he was driving didn't look like he was from around the area.
"Um... only a few months, I'm just here to visit family." Alex felt a bit awkward speaking in half-truth, but it was necessary. No one could know about any of "his" troubles. Jen was practically family anyway, so it wasn't too much off of the truth.
"Ah, I see. That's very nice. I hope you have had a grand time so far?" The man had his face turned forward towards the traffic again, but he had a strange feeling about this young man. He felt almost... almost like he didn't belong in society. A strange assumption, but still one he couldn't fully shrug off. He didn't let this bother him. It was probably just his old nerves popping up to stir around his day a bit.
"Yeah, It's been... "great"." Alex was now extremely uncomfortable talking to this person. "His" feelings about the matter now showing up on his face.
Noticing the young fellow getting a bit uneasy, the old man decided to not bother him for awhile. Visitors were always like that to an extent... he was sure it was just that.
As the he continued driving Alex to the location, both of them suddenly heard the alarms go off, accompanied by the loud message.
"Oh, this isn't good at all... no no no..." The man anxiously gazed at the crowds of people dispersing from the streets with a horrified expression on his face.
"Just drop me off... I'll find somewhere to stay." Alex looked out the right window of the cab to see a child being brought into a nearby apartment building with it's mother, dropping his stuffed animal along the way.
After a brief moment of silence, the man spoke, "No... that isn't right, if you don't have anywhere to go you can stay at my place. It should be just around the corner actually."
"I insist, I don't want to give you any trouble..."
"NO, I insist. No good mannered young person such as yourself should be put in danger like this. You can feel free to stay in my home for as long as you need to." The man suddenly turned around the corner and stopped in front of a large apartment building, the street already mostly deserted of people.
"Hurry, get yourself inside. My room is number 433... here's the key." The man passed the key to Alex, then went to the back of his car to get something out of the trunk.
"Are you sure...?" Alex felt a slight pang of guilt for leaving the kind fellow out in the street, although none of it showed up on "his" face.
"Just go, I'll be fine." The man didn't look up as he hurriedly worked to grab whatever was important enough to endanger himself out of the trunk. He payed no heed to how the entire street was also deserted, going about his task as fast as he could, his physique not helping in the slightest.
After another brief pause, Alex turned to make "his" way into the apartment.
I can't just leave him here, he looks like he can barely run at my walking pace...
Changing "his" mind, Alex rushed over next to the man, helping him open the trunk.
"I'll go after we get your things, come on, let's hurry."
"I... thank you, kind sir." The man showed obvious relief at not having to get the items out by himself.
The trunk opened to reveal nothing but a small envelope. The man hurriedly grabbed it, clinging to it against his chest as if it were some holy item.
You risked yourself... FOR THAT?!
Alex shook "his" head in minor disbelief. This man must have been insane to go about so much trouble just to get some pieces of paper. "He" pulled down the lid of the trunk with a confused expression on "his" face.
"Alright alright, let's get in, I'm putting us both in danger." The man started shuffling towards the door of the apartment complex, soon followed by the dumbfounded Alex.
