Isn't there any good Zombie anime? Aside from HoTD.

I know some decent manga ones, but not anime.

Okay. I'm not a manga guy, I've never even opened one or used a scanlation site (and never will), I just never saw the point of the middle ground between a book and an anime. But now, I don't think I feel the same way, but I really have no idea where to start. But I have a few problems that I hope you all can help me with.

Firstly, I need a wish list. I know some of you don't really like giving large lists of recommendations, I'm looking at you Hewitt, but it would help me out a lot (I'll be researching every suggestion before I even consider buying it, so throw everything at me). Preferably it would be best if it hasn't been adapted into another medium and if it's already finished. I have an affinity for anything mature and I suppose my favorite genres are: sci-fi, cyber-punk, fantasy, mystery, and thrillers, although I'm pretty much good for anything with an amazing story and characters.

Secondly, I was wondering if there was any really good online manga companies that I can buy from, it might sound weird, but I would prefer my money going to a dedicated manga/comic book store instead of amazon. Obviously I'm going to buy from Madman or somewhere in Aus first, but with the brief browsing I've done, it doesn't look like there's a massive range here.
Also, how long is the average story? Anything over 10 volumes is gonna be a cunt to buy... Cheers guys.

Inb4 Raptor suggests Akumetsu

Dude I watched the one that some dipshit subbed (the grammar was horrible), and it was kinda not what I expected it to be. They just kinda worn out the idea of time travel.

I'll still watch the one with the legit sub tho, because who knows maybe the horribly subbed version ruined everything.

I think 10 volumes is around 70ish chapters I believe. A good manga can range anywhere from 30 chapters to 150 chapters I think.

So off the top of my head:
Btoom! (Action, Thriller, Sci-Fi)
Kuroshitsuji (Action, Thriller, Mystery)
Pandora Hearts (Action, Mystery)
The Breaker (Action)
Liar Game (Thriller, Mystery)
And of course
Akumetsu.

I might update the list if I have more time.
VIZ manga I think is a good place to buy manga.

What's this suppose to mean?

It's not that I never give long lists, it's just people often come here looking for recommended anime and then some hipster comes in and BAM offers things like Titan or Gurren Lagann or Fairy Tail, or some other thing we've heard about for the past year or so.

I don't give lists because people don't bother with it if it's not already some kind of popular thing that people already know about. They also hate reading as opposed to watching. Ugh. I read manga that are off-the-grid (most likely no anime) and I like mostly supernatural/horror/mystery kinds of stuff but I'm open to some shonen too depending on the style.

Anyways, I see Raptor already has some entries that I have as well. It might just be our similar tastes though. Here's my list complete with descriptions to get you interested.

Complete:
Enigma (spelled Enigme with the small e in reverse) - Imagine a less depressing Mirai Nikki where the protagonist is typical of shonen and not so much a depressing loser. Nakama abound, and the mystery/puzzle is well worth the read. It's also pretty short (as in, it doesn't drag on).

Gamaran - If Naruto wasn't an unlikeable idiot and he was a samurai, basically. The plot is like Fist of the North Star where various schools of martial arts duke it out almost Battle Royale style early on but turns into an invasion arc in the 2nd half of the manga. The fights are moderately technical, with emphasis on the pseudo science of it and is not afraid to show gore. The characters are all lovable if not formulaic but hey it's a shonen so whatever.

Biomeat & Region - Made the same author with practically the same premise so I'll bunch them together. Both stories are basically about an unstoppable hoard (genetically mutated starfish creatures that can eat anything in Biomeat, and genetically mutated Rats that can eat anything in Region) that plagues the protagonists as they try to escape from whatever it is they are trapped in. Biomeat has 3 arcs where the protagonists age up twice, while Region is just one big survival arc (and is thus shorter). Don't dismiss this as your typical Survival manga though. Within each arc is very nice characterization and development that makes you want to invest in the lives of these characters the more you read it. That and the final arc of biomeat just reminds me of Die Hard. Die Hard with mutant spawn.

Doubt & Judge (latter is ongoing) - Once again, both by the same author and both practically the same premise: People locked in a room with clues and shit taunting them and a mysterious benefactor pulling the strings. And of course nothing is as it seems and people will die blahblahblah. It's intelligent if not a little cliche but I'm sure you'll appreciate it.

Darker Than Black - the only thing here that I recommend you to watch the anime instead. It's a sci-fi story about 'Contractors': people who have to do something compulsively to use supernatural powers (like breaking your fingers to control gravity, or being naked to teleport). Not as silly as it sounds and the tone is downright serious. The protagonist is also a badass and an adult instead of a teenager. There is an over-arching plot about why Contractors exist and its tied to Astronomy.

NaruTaru (Shadow Star in English) & Bokurano - Both by the same author again. Both works are similar in that they deconstruct the very genre they are portraying. Narutaru deconstructs the Mons genre (digimon and pokemon) while Bokurano deconstructs mecha anime where kids pilot these robots. Both manga start out really really peaceful and formulaic. I mean, take a look at NaruTaru's Opening for chrissake. Don't be fooled though, as the plot soon devolves into absolute madness. It's brilliant if you're into deconstruction themes.

Ongoing:
Liar Game - Basically Death Note with Game Theory, where a genius conman protagonist and his always-honest-idiot ladyfriend take on a corporation who design gambling games that require a bit of deception. The manga is very wordy and often times it takes an entire chapter (or 3 or 4) to explain what the fuck just happened but trust me, it's fucking brilliant. I would read this right now, if only because a major arc just ended. The author also has a tendency to take LONG hiatuses so don't expect it to end anytime soon.

Gamble Fish - I think this is already complete, but the scanlation isn't. It's like Liar Game except replace Deception with Chance. The games and the plots are more absurd and epic as a result (tossing coins into a tiny cup in the middle of a blasting furnace for example). And the protagonist is more of a gambler than a conman, meaning his ability to solve these things rely more on taking risks and psych-ing people out than underhandedly controlling everything in a subtle manner.

Btooom! - A more serious, mature take on the Battle Royale genre. Heck, it is Battle Royale. While the original BR focused more on the political aspects of the game (which the manga admittedly made more exciting by turning the gore up to 11), Btooom touches more on the protagonist and makes things a little more realistic. He's not a psycho killer with shonen qualities. He's just a normal guy trying to survive.

I Am A Hero - Did you ever wish Highschool of the Dead wasn't focused on fanservice? Look no further. Like Btooom, the protagonist is an everyman and the manga as a whole isn't laden with action, instead focusing on characterization and the psychology of it. I would say, its the manga version of Walking Dead tbh.

Mahou Shoujo of the End & Mahou Shoujo Site - Both by the same author. Don't be fooled by the names, these are both horror manga in the vein of Magica Puella Madoka except these 2 aren't afraid of showing some onscreen gore and the often scary implications of Magical Girls. Currently not very far but I would recommend at least a glance. More people need to know about this manga. The former is more of an Invasion Arc with plot elements from Blackest Night and the latter is more about a Mysterious Website.

I have more if you wish. Might type them up later.

Biomeat and Mahou Shoujo of the End definitely aren't for everybody imo. MSE is just outright disturbing and you'll immediately know what I mean after reading the first three chapters. Biomeat I tried to read and didn't finish. The creatures themselves were just too disturbing and the characters weren't likable enough honestly. Just my two cents.

lol, you're discounting Biomeat and MSE but not NaruTaru's infamous worm scene? You should definitely not read that then.

It helps to know that I was frankly surprised that Biomeat was a shonen manga when I finished it. You should really try and finish reading it Raptor, at least until the first timeskip.

What I like about MSE is that Anybody Can Die. It's not just a survival thing. It's the horror of this immense Eldritch abomination that just won't give up until everything is dead and there's little to nothing you can do about it. So don't be turned off by the gore. Endure it XD

But yeah, just so you know youwishjellyfish, the goriest thing I've seen in Mahou Shoujo of the End is

I'm not gonna lie, these all made me excited and giddy, and then I remembered how poor I am... But all in good time. Thank you very much to both of you, you gave me a whole lot more than I was expecting.
Quick question, how far past the anime is the Btooom! manga? (Likewise with Aku no Hana, just out of curiosity)

Also whats your thoughts of Biomega? It was one of few manga Madman has that caught my eye.

I read about the plot and it seems way more character focused, especially the romance between KURISUTIIIIIIIIIINAAAAAAAAAAA and HOUOUIN than anything else, but I'm still interested in it.
