If a spellcaster was chosen to be champion, would it's spells be amplified as well?

Quote from Azxcit gives a chance to those low tiers to really contribute in late game
I think rather the opposite to be frank. The champion mechanic puts more emphasis on teching up into higher tier units because champion used on say, a giant, will be better than champion used on a spearton, which will be better than champion used on a sword.

I agree with that. Using it on a low tier unit is a waste. They are a low tier for a reason. ;)

well it is a matter of balancing
everyone will just make their giant be the champion (or the strongest unit) if every units are buffed equally after being a champion
this feature will be utterly useless
I do think CJ's purpose is enhance the advantage of a specific unit by making him a champion, such as
champion a giant= more tanky
champion a ninja= more damage and speed maybe?
there are a lot of ways to buff a unit so we cannot deduce that making a sword or a cat to a champion is completely useless

Get a spear by 3 min. Hero it. Didn't win yet? Get a Mage, 5 mins in. Hero it. Still haven't won? You suck. Get a giant. Hero it. GG.

In fact this above ^^ is why buffing low tier units needs to be not just worthwhile but actually be able to contest buffing the higher ones.

Hero Mage sounds like it'd be a beast...Buddylucky...please...mercy...

It's probably just revert back to beta Mage which was beast af. Only now it can tank shinobi 2 and have burn.

Why is the beta mage so alpha :O
Also, low tier champion example? Champion bombers. One shot hustle miners after burn :D

This is gonna sound lame, but what about champion miner? Mines faster, carries more gold, and moves faster. :P

Interesting in concept, but a here are some ideas to keep it balanced:
- Don't make it free. Make it cost mana and/or gold based on the cost of the original unit. That way, you could champion a sword or a miner with your pocket change, but buffing a magikill or a giant would be something to save up for.
- Do not allow multiple champions at once, but do keep the cooldown. This would give an advantage to buffing otherwise useless archers and miners. - - - - Ignore this, I misread.
- Make some drawbacks and add some depth. For example, a champion swordwrath would have more health, damage, speed, and could use an improved rage without research, but the improved rage would do a ton more recoil damage. Or perhaps the magikill could have less health, but make up for it with an extra spell or two (minion and stun from SW1, maybe?). The point I'm trying to make is that the champions should not be two-dimensional buffs, but should be molded around the strengths and weaknesses of the units.
But yeah, I've been wanting a side mode with these mechanics basically since the game came out! Should be interesting.
