wRHG. I gotta know.

People saw Terkoiz, thought it was awesome, decided to make an RHG and be just as awsum as him, downloaded flash, realized animating actually took skill and effort, saw wRHG as an easier version of RHG and decided to do that because they didn't want to spend time learning flash and thought they could take the easy way out becoming famous by doing wRHG because they thought making a cool RHG was the only requirement..

Now thats not fair. You're generalizing, Raptor. There are some truths in that, but not everyone is like that.
EDIT: Actually now that I think about it, you're just contributing to putting the WL in a bad light. Is this what everyone thinks? Seriously?

Pox, to answer your question, we're going to have to rewind the clock back to FA days. Ever wonder why the Writer's Lounge was called THE Writer's Lounge? The Writer's Lounge was what it was: a Lounge. It wasn't a place for writers in an animation forum to goto, it was a place where animators could unwind BY writing. It had a minor following and the first wRHG-ers were actually animators who wanted to explore other dimensions that animation just couldnt like backstory, personality, continuity. It was a productive creative thing.

2nd-Generation wRHG-ers were actually fans of the 1st Gens who's names are even more obscure and unknown than the long-forgotten animators but if you ask every veteran WL-er, they'll know who they are by heart. And here is where Raptor's words ring true: they were ex-Flash users who found solace in a tiny community who accepted written works for their what-could-have-beens. It is not fair to say that those users didn't take the time and effort to learn Flash as much as they just found writing to be a much better outlet for their fantasy-fuelled characters.

Finally you have the 3rd and 4th gen writers, who have no idea about the above origins and basically joined the site specifically TO write. A couple of these are transplants from the SE section who wrote their crappy fanfiction. Others are genuine writers who thought this to be a good way to pass the time and be creative. wRHG-ers were never meant to be bunched in the same boat as RHG-ers. They just had the decidedly same origins and people who have no idea often misconstrue and chalk it up as "imitation RHG". They have to stop thinking about this mentality that's creating a rift between writers and animators.

This is why I always tell Neo-writers (basically anyone who joined from the Merge onward, who werent aware of FA) that they shouldnt be treating the WL as if it was a separate entity. Anyone who doesn't wRHG, must be able to write in OLit and the wRHG-ers shouldn't just be doing wRHGs because they were never meant to be doing JUST that originally. We're writers, so we should be as creative as we can without having to ask "Can we use our characters in this?" whenever an event comes into question.

Can someone explain the appeal of the Segway? I don't get how you can use it for anything other than monetizing walking. You stand on it and like, it has wheels and its. Was it originally made with a purpose in mind? Medical? Therapeutic kind of purpose? Because I seem to recall a moment where everyone was in on it.

I'm sure it's been brought up already, but I really don't get the appeal of animating stick fights anymore.

It's absurd to me that in 2014, over 13 years after xiao xiao came out, anyone can still open Flash with the intention to create a <15 second "combo" animation and feel like they're doing anything other than wasting their time.

I mean if you have an actual artistic vision that you can actualize with stick figures, that's one thing, but if all you want to do is animate generic stick fights I honestly can't think of a bigger waste of practice, effort and time. You might as well spend years learning guitar just so you can play a cover of Wonderwall, there's already tens of thousands of people who can play their own covers, many of whom are better than you'll ever be, and at the end of the day no matter how good you get it's still derivative of someone else's work.

It doesn't help that the BSE and RHG reinforces the value of generic fight/"combo" animations. I just wish there was some sort of collective drive to do something other than the same boring sequences of stick figures punching and kicking each other.

Late, but oh well.

I get why people would want to animate sticks still. Different generations will have reoccurring interests, it's not that uncommon. It's sort of like asking why people still enjoy pop music after all these years. It's not the same people, but the same demographic and community which keeps these things as interests.

-and I believe people don't get it because they see the stickfigure community as if all people are meant to improve and become professional, or are doing a poor job of doing so.

Some people just do it out of entertainment for themselves and friends.
A hobby, not always a profession.

you're a little more than just late, there was a separate thread made to continue the discussion started by that post, where several people (including myself) acknowledged pretty much everything you just said.

not that I expect you to know that. just saying.

I don't get the appeal of those overpriced rip-off sports games that release literally every year with just an updated roster. I know tons of people who continue to pour money into these games and I don't understand why. It's not different than the one you bought a year ago. Just a small roster update that's barley noticeable. I also don't understand the appeal of MLP. It looks too bright to me and it just hurts my eyes. Bright shows like that with flying ponies and bunnies just don't click with me, but click with so much other people.
