But are you self-taught, man? And do you play solo or with a band?
100% self-taught aside from the shitty high school guitar course I took to get started. I also taught myself to play drums and piano.
I'm basically a one man band with my current setup, I have a keyboard and guitar going through several effects and into a mini-mixer, which outputs to a loop pedal, then finally an amplifier. I can play a percussion part on the keyboard, loop it, then add guitar/bass/whatever loops on top of it.
But for the most part I jam with my friend Matt using the above setup while he plays guitar and a micro synth, both going into a loop pedal of his own, so our stuff sounds very layered for just two people. By pure chance we play very similarly and love using weird guitar effects and tones. He has several of our older recordings on his soundcloud:
Everything Will Turn Out... Right
Pilot
Head Beat
He has a multitrack mixer that we used for those. First I made a drum loop, then we recorded the loop for 3-4 minutes so we had one percussion track as a reference. Then we added layers one at a time until it was done.
This one we improvised live in one take, he played drums while I played a split keyboard patch for the atmospherics and the bass later in the song. We just hit record and went for it, no planning or writing or anything ahead of time. That's pretty much the only way we do it.
As far as my solo stuff is concerned, I could show you the best bits so you don't have to listen to so much unn-tiss unn-tiss. The breakdowns in my songs are my personal favorite parts to write and listen to so I'll tell you where to listen.
Perihelion - skip to 4:30 for some epic orchestral trance.
September - skip to 4:00 for a guitar/flute breakdown
Particle Horizon - skip to 3:50 for a piano breakdown
Dream Machine - my mixing skills were shit back then but this is still my favorite trance track that I've written. Breakdown starts just a bit before the halfway mark as usual. Just sit back and listen once the keys start playing, I don't think I've written a prettier melody since this one.
And if you want an idea of what 3 years of improvement sounds like, I
started a rework of Dream Machine that I never got around to finishing, but it's by far the most polished/professional sounding trance track I've made.
Vocal trance, remix of 'Satellite' by Oceanlab. This one was pretty popular around here back when I was posting music regularly to the forums. Almost 7 years old but I still like the way it turned out.
and for shits and giggles,
here's the earliest song I wrote that I still have a recording of.
edit: scratch that,
I do have a recording of my very first song, this was made the same day I downloaded FL Studio.
