i don't dislike the holy grail, but the parts that directly relate to that kind of humor i really do hate sitting through... like the entire intro thing, the knights who say ni, literally every animated part, the bunny... it's whatever though. the more black humor parts redeem the movie for me
also, if i wanted to knock on Kurosawa, i probably would talk about the melodramatic shit. i'm curious as to what "awful Japanese tele-dramas" were directly inspired by him, though. have you actually watched any? i feel like i'd probably enjoy them tbh...

My point is there are people, including myself, who really fucking love Knights who say Ni, the killer bunny etc without necessarily liking the whole "Lolwut llamas are so funny" form of humour.

in all seriousness though, the intro scene does mention a lot of llamas
Jul 16, 2015 10:51 AM #1383539
The intro scenes mentions a lot of stuff. Just because something mentions Llamas, it does not automatically exclude it from being funny. That would be as moronic as someone who claims that anything which mentions Llama is automatically funny.

they replaced people's names with the word "llama" and other funny words. that's some funny chit right there mane.

That is incorrect, sir. You're simply taking one joke out of context and claiming that is the whole joke, which either makes you a liar or you've completely missed the point.
The opening credits of Monty Python begin in a conventional way, and then slowly disintegrate into chaos and madness, and it leads to a gag where they announce "Ladies and Gentlemen, the person who made the opening credits has been fired for being too boring, we are now hiring someone new" and it gets progressively tackier and worse with flashing lights, and finally everyone's names being replaced with ridiculous things like Llama. THATS the joke. Not the fact the people's name are replaced with Llamas, which is merely a small part of a MUCH larger gag which deals with absurdity and surreal humour.

i understand that the opening credits were meant to be silly and became increasingly silly with the flashing lights and mariachi shit. i've just been saying that it really reminds me of "lol so random" humor. "asdf movie" does similarly "absurd" things which i don't enjoy either. there's nothing actually "wrong" with it, but it's not something i like, i dunno man.
they might as well have started putting pictures of tacos and pie on the screen tbh, would've fit right in.

Which brings me back to what I said. Just because they had shitty imitators, it doesn't mean they themselves were practitioners of bad humour. Back when they did it, no one else was doing it, they were trailblazers who broke every established rule of film-making. The people who followed them did it to be "Lelzwe'resoweirdletsbefunny". I dare anyone to find one joke in all of Monty Python that doesn't fit into some context (unlike their imitators who did it for 'random' humour.)
An example : Even the Knights who say Ni, who don't let the characters pass unless they too say the word 'Ni', which initially seems like an example of "lol so random" humour (and it does work as that) later reveals to be a build-up for an in-context joke where the Knights keep changing their name to increasingly complex words (it goes from 'Ni' to 'Icky icky icky ptong zoo boi blablbbhaha',) making it increasingly difficult with each scene for the heroes to pass for comedic effect.
Of course like with any great comedy that is breaking the rules, there will be some scenes that aren't funny and some which are fucking hilarious. But its one of the greatest movies of all time because the scenes that DO work are funny as hell and easily overpower any jokes that don't work.

of course their gags are thought out and have ideas behind them; i never disagreed about that. when i posted this:
i wasn't disagreeing with what you said. i was simply explaining my personal reaction to watching the film and why i didn't love it
"i can't help but see" should be read as "the following is an explanation of my own viewing experience rather than a serious critique of the film"
one of the things i appreciate most about the film is that such a level of ridiculousness was shown in 1975. the flashing lights and llamas seem like they came out of a shitty youtube video, and that's amazing. but at the same time, as i've said, it's not something i love sitting through or actually laugh at...

i can't help but see monty python as the main influence on the "I LIEK PIE xD!!!!!!!!!" "llamas and alpacas are funny :)" "his name is bob LOL!!!!" "TACOS *holds up spork*" lolsorandom brand of humor that i despise

I think it might help that I saw the film before I even knew what YouTube was, much less watched shitty videos on it. So to me it was just like "Oh haha yeah if you hired someone who had no talent to do something 'cool', these flashing lights would be what they looked like", which was the point of the joke.
What are some of the comedies that you do like?

I can't believe I left out Borat on my list. Great shame. I need to add that one in there too. I think I need to consolidate everything into a Top 100 list.
Also, Hausu is on your list but you're against randomness? Lol.

hausu was deliciously surreal and mind-boggling. a "comedy" that isn't very funny but still an immensely enjoyable experience. and no mentions of llamas to be found.
