So there's been alot of space-hype for the past few years. Interstellar (movie). Cosmos (tv). And now there's the upcoming The Martian, based on a novel about a guy who had to live on Mars.
and then we have this.
Mars One is a program who's goal is to screen a thousand contestants and put 20 into Mars. Permanently. To start a colony and and become permanent residents on the planet (and do research I'm presuming) or something. Let's say you're already qualified and get the opportunity to be one of the lucky 20 if you ever entered, would you do it?
I don't really know anything about living conditions in Mars, but I'd rather focus on what exactly you'd be leaving behind.
Friends. Family. Essentially your whole life. You'd be all-set though, and wouldn't have to worry about money or the future. It'd be like having a mansion on an island. An island separated by miles of antimatter and darkness. It takes less than a year give or take to goto Mars, but that is still a long ass time. Can you imagine yourself sitting in that ship or in hypersleep or something, thinking to yourself how you can never take your decision back?
Dropping everything to live on Mars VS sticking to Earth and all its foibles. Discuss.
I mean the answer might be pretty obvious (No), but you never know. Maybe someone here would harbor a deep down desire to go and just leave it all behind.
Would you goto Mars FOREVER?

No internet

Hmm, but then again, I get to play Crusoe and, since I'm (assumed) qualified and have all the necessary know-how I'll enjoy feeling altruistic by my heroic efforts.

I'd do it. It's clearly something important to the meaning of mankind and my life < The future. Hopefully I'd be able to figure out something that helps.

I read somewhere people could possibly set up wifi on Mars, but it will take about 20 minutes for a text message to reach somebody on Earth.

Well damn. That's 20 minutes too long for me lol. Seriously, a 3 text message conversation would take an hour.

If I can't watch a youtube video and browse stickpage at the same time then it's too slow.

It would time out before it even let you connect lol.
Youtube wouldn't even load. The request for a byte of data takes 20 minutes? (In response to the text message)
No way. It would take 10 years before a 20 minute video was done. (Disclaimer: No actual math was done.)

I haven't traveled around my own planet yet, so I'll stay here. It might take my whole life to go to different places on the Earth.

Not only would I be the first man on Mars, but I could be the first man to jerk off on Mars. Being remembered for that would be worth dying alone on the red planet.
