Can you give us a few genres that you feel like watching at the moment? It helps with focusing the list we give you. Also, do you happen to have something like a MAL account so we can avoid recommending things you've already seen? Otherwise I'm just gonna recommend heaps obscure stuff you've probably never seen.
On and unrelated note, I've started reading Jojo's, god have mercy on my soul.

These are some more action orientated anime that I hold in pretty high regard, I suggest you just plug the names in MAL and see which ones you feel like watching, or just ask me about any and I can go into more detail:

not action show, but things that I still liked (Click to Show)
The second list is pretty varied in it's genres... But hopefully you find something to your liking.

can you explain FLCL to me please? I swear everyone's raving about how "it's a great coming of age story" but honestly I can't see how a boner on the forehead is great symbolism.
To add to that, none of it even makes sense.

Ehhh urghhh... arghhh...
It is a coming of age story, but I don't know if I'd call it great... Or at least the coming of age themes weren't what kept me interested. It has been a while since I saw it so keep in mind somethings I say might be completely wrong and I might be forgetting certain important points...
Seeing as symbolism is something that has never interested me I won't bother trying to explain/justify any of it, I'll leave that to any artsy user, but there is a noticeable change in Naota as he develops from a 'boy trying to be a grown-up' to someone that has at least a hint or worldliness/maturity. He stops trying to be what he considers an adult to be (drinking sour/bitter drinks, acting if everything is dull and mundane, and going about a normal day to day life), stops trying to escape his brothers shadow, and starts acting like someone that is comfortable just being themselves.
As for the plot
Honestly, I think it's an amazing show. It has a kick ass sound track, the animation is wacky and visually interesting, the characters a crazy but very enjoyable and surprisingly deep, and it's just short and sweet. But it has something else going for it, FLCL can be as deep as any one person can want it to be. You only think it's crazy wacky fun? That's cool, you're right. You think it is an interesting story with deep characters masked by wackyness? That's cool, you're right. You think it is an amazing coming of age story that follows the hardship of a young boy trying to find his place in the world while feeling the need to follow his brothers footsteps but being afraid that he can never achieve those goals? That's cool, you're right.
And all that makes it very interesting and horrendously accessible to nearly everyone.

As someone who does not know anything about FLCL, I must watch it.

I'm not into symbolism either, but it's the one thing I keep seeing people say about it. I guess I just can't relate enough to the kid to understand what the fuck he was thinking about most of the time (although I admit I'm a bit angsty at times, but seriously I don't remember ever being as naive as him).
What's more, I didn't pick up on Haruko being a girl until she was referred to as a "she".
I watched it on a shit-quality stream site though, so I guess I missed the part that could have made me like it; the animation itself. It guess it was supposed to look crazy, but if you're watching it on 240p-esque, blurry quality, it will just look messy.

FLCL is a fucking parody.
This ain't Cowboy Bebop, this ain't s-CRY-ed. There's not a lot of symbolism to interpret here.

I'd probably chalk it down to people reading into it far to much in a desperate attempt to defend a show that they love. I honestly didn't see much if any, but like I said, it's never interested me so I don't go looking for it. I've also heard of people saying it's there, buuuuut I wouldn't be surprised if they were all talking out of their ass.
answer to your question (Click to Show)
I just finished Noragami. I thought it was fucking excellent, or at least excellent for a shounen. There was nothing mind blowing, but the characters were cool and developed in an interesting way. The angst never hit Eren-level, the naivety was handled pretty well, and the 'friendship trumps all' didn't make me face palm. I thought the pacing was quite nice and the whole show was just very pretty to look at. The animation was also of a pretty high quality, but it only made my jaw drop once at the was in the final episode. I'm not going to run out into the street and scream that Bones is back, but the thought did cross my mind, which can only be a good thing.
Also, a trend I seem to be noticing is studios using colours for the line art. Light browns, purples, blues, and red instead of the standard blacks. What do you guys think about this? Is it something you want more of, or is it a style that will get annoying if people start overusing it?

I'd it in scenes full of emotion. Everytime.

What should I start watching first?, Kill la kill or Guilty crown?.

Hmmmm, they're both pretty good I guess, so it shouldn't matter either way. They both kinda require you to turn your brain off, though for different reason, so I guess it depends on what mood you're in at the moment.
Kill la kill is crazy and bombastic but really isn't anything more than popcorn material. So if you want to turn your brain off and watch something that is outrageous, with crazy explosions, and is as stupid as it is entertaining. Then Kill la kill is what you need.
Guilty crown is beautiful but is so inconsistent that you need to turn your brain off and just let yourself be taken with the emotion of the show, otherwise you'll hate it. It's music is great, it's animation is great, but the story and characters are a bit 'eh' if you're looking for a super serious show. But if you want to get lost in some beautiful themes (even if they make no sense) then Guilty Crown will do you fine.
Hope I helped.
