I hate how I've reached a point in my life when reading something like this physically pains me. I was literally squinting in a combination of hatred and disbelief at the stupidity of it.

I almost feel like this, but then I remind myself that he's just a kid and let it go.

Facts are directly observable and experimentally verifiable.

Theories explain phenomena that we cannot observe directly (gravity, evolution, the big bang) using facts and evidence. It's an explanation, the best one possible given the data that supports it. Facts will never become theories and vice versa.

If you're going to challenge a theory, you need to address the facts behind it, and explain why they are incompatible with the theory. Dismissing it as "just a theory" is just proving your own ignorance to simple scientific terms.

By this logic, Harry Potter is "proof" that wizards exist because a story about them is written in a series of books.

If I get a sharp pain in my leg, the only thing that I can say for sure is "I feel something". That doesn't say anything about what's causing it. Could be a cramp, or a bug biting me, or anything else.

If I also believe the ghost of Andre the Giant is haunting me, and I say he's the one making my leg hurt, that doesn't prove anything. That's ridiculous.

You feel something, but you have no reason to say it's God causing it.

Uhh, you base your entire moral code on a book? Being an atheist doesn't mean you can't be a good person, I don't need a commandment to know murder is wrong. You're coming off as a pompous dick for implying your religion makes you better than me.

call them facts, call them theories. when you get down to it, there not sure! have you read much on the big bang theory? the whole idea is pretty much them not being sure. some suggest it had something to do with black holes. well who made the black holes?

i would suggest not relating God with silly fiction tales. remember that even scientists say we only use 10% of our full brain power. jesus uses more then 10%, and thats where the "wizard" type stuff might come in.

i suggest moving away from the "feeling" thing since unfortunatley your not in tune enough to feel it. andre the giant stabbing your leg is extremely different then listening and feeling Gods presence.

im sorry if you got butt hurt but that wasnt directed towards you. i was merely saying that when you feel like doing something bad, like commiting adultry, thats a demon tempting you. honestly a conversation with a person with a hardened heart is seeming more and more hopeless. man, this forum seems very one sided... also please consult the debate forum rules. calling me a dick is completely out of line and off topic. its a debate not an argument.

im not sure if this will tilt you in the right direction since you dont know or trust me, but, i know people who were enlightened enough to speak with god. and no, they werent crazy. it was actually the most sane man i know. my father. pretty sure that wont matter to you but i wanted to throw it in anyways.

Yeah I have read about the big bang, and I've probably spent more time explaining it on this forum than anyone else.

So when you say..

..a conversation with an idiot who talks like an expert gets more and more frustrating. So forgive me for calling you a dick, but everything you've said makes it extremely obvious you have no idea what you're talking about. And since you're saying these things to "tilt me in the right direction", you already assume I'm wrong and you're right

Everything I say will be dismissed because, assuming you understand it, it's worthless when you don't trust science for some fucking reason. Everything you say is so borderline incoherent that I have a hard time believing you're not a troll, and I can't take you seriously when you say completely incorrect things like "scientists say we only use 10% of our full brain power".

not an idiot. not a troll. am strong in my beliefs. going straight to insulting my intelligence almost makes me believe YOU dont know what your talking about and need to distract from the subject. i actually know much about what im talking about. you are just to stubborn to believe it.
actually there are scientists that believe we have only tapped into 10% of our full brain power. i believe these scientists even though they're are other people debating that.

please explain why you think what i said was "incoherent", instead of just saying it.

dont forget there will always be people that believe one thing and people that believe something completley different. that doesnt make one of the people an idiot.

I can understand having different beliefs, but I can't understand how you're able to form yours based on stuff like this. You don't care enough to look it up before deciding whether or not it's true. If you google search "10% of brain" you'll get a few million results that all explain, in extensive detail, how full of shit you are.

ive already read about it on websites like that. they said scientists only understand 10% of the brain so they thought that was the only part you used. they later decided that doesnt mean thats all they use but they havent proved we can use our full brain potentional.

this is at the end of that page "Some New Age proponents propagate this belief by asserting that the "unused" ninety percent of the human brain is capable of exhibiting psychic powers and can be trained to perform psychokinesis and extra-sensory perception. There is no scientifically verified body of evidence supporting the existence of such powers."

theres no evidence. they didnt say its impossible.

There's no evidence that it is possible.

If they say it can be done, it's up to them to prove it. You can't find evidence to disprove something that doesn't exist.

Could someone paraphrase dabig's posts for me? Whenever I read them I can feel my brain cells dying at an accelerated rate.

You're not even being subtle about picking and choosing whichever beliefs you like most, regardless of the evidence. You explicitly only accept evidence from people who support your pre-determined world view. And on top of that, you consistently refuse to reply to me. I don't know why I'm here.

I read it, it's interesting, I just don't know what to say in response to it.
