I did some animation with 3DSM and compared to the animation style of South Park you have to be some kind of good to be that bad lol. I've heard that Maya is moreso for animation rather than 3D design, such as 3DSM.

This is really inspiring jeff, although it makes sense, what you say is sort of like the stuff inspirational speakers say, eventually this wears off, because we're too young to get why we shouldn't and like you said, the effect is not immediate. this probably true for us here

I have always been suggesting that everyone have their own thread and that they don't post outside this thread unless it's in the community project section (or another section for full lengths).

Why not do this? People aren't going to stop posting shorts. I did it all the time. Enforce a system like DD's thread system and you're set. Easier to moderate, less cluster, more organised.

Quote from Hewitt
I find it funny that people are agreeing with Jeff like it's brand new insight, when Jombo has mentioned of this every single time someone talks about not finishing on time, or giving up, or not improving despite the vast amount of time spent attempting to animate. So yeah, bandwagons.

I haven't seen Jombo talk about it before but since you now mention it. No offence but I think jeff approaches this issues a little differently and that would make him much easier to agree it. So we are clear, I am not getting on the bandwagon as some would say but simply acknowledging that Jeff is right

You do treat this like it's a matter between "you either vary yourself, or good luck salvaging any hope of getting into the animation business."
Half, no, MOST of the animators here have taken this up as a hobby; nothing more.

Xero, you're right so people, people please don't come on here crying because your favourite animator animates as an hobby. It's the real world deal with it, sometimes people who treat this as an hobby will be better at it sometimes.

From what I have seen, this looks like a debate.

Terkoiz IS NOT AN AMATEUR, He has been animating since RHA (Rock Hard Anims (10 years)) and I dont think your in any position to call him an amateur, He understands Physics, easing, and some fullbody. So hes not an amateur.

am·a·teur noun \ˈa-mə-(ˌ)tər, -ˌtu̇r, -ˌtyu̇r, -ˌchu̇r, -chər\

Definition of AMATEUR

1
: devotee, admirer
2
: one who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession

Pretty sure Terkoiz falls under that category.

If he did it as a profession, that would make him a professional. Knowing "physics, easing, and some fullbody", does not make one a professional animator.

"Easing" is literally the most fundamental aspect of animation. And being able to animate an object to look like it has weight doesn't mean you "understand physics", animators who aren't capable of doing that shouldn't be calling themselves animators.

That doesn't mean he isn't talented, but he's an amateur in every sense of the word.

Sure, making a living off this technically makes you a 'professional'
But 'professional' also implies that one is an expert.

Terkoiz is not an expert.
Jesus christ.

O-Oh wait a sec...

Holy shit, wait a fucking second...

HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE

He understands Physics, easing, and some fullbody?

Dear god I had no idea. I take back everything I said about Terkoiz being an amateur.
Why didn't you guys tell me he knew Physics, easing and some fullbody?

He is most certainly by any reasonable analysis a goldfuck mountain, cock champion, god-conquering artlord in disguise.

i really hope people read this and take it to heart. i see this ALL the time :P i dont even bother going on the community animations section anymore. and yeah I'm guilty of it too but at least I've been striving to get better at it and i like to think I have. kudos, Jeff. i hope this post is taken very seriously :)

also, even though this is stickpage, you dont have to animate sticks. when we see a stick figure animated well we jizz in our pants, while some dude at disney is like "this is crap! terkoiz is a little bitch." so id say basic good advice is to be better then sticks and strive for disney status animation. or if your gonna do sticks, make it original for christ sake's. do something know one's seen before because im honestly tired of the cliche rust breakers, the cliche combo breakers, the cliche speed battles and the crappiest cliche unoriginal collabs you've ever seen (if they ever even get finished). we need some kind of intervention or something to get the website and forum back on its feet.

I fully agree with what Jombo has to say, coming from personal experience in this community for almost 2 years i primarily did short tests which helped me with certain areas, and although i am okay with flips, kicks, jumps, fire bblood and all that jazz i am god awful in every type of characterization there is including hand gestures, waves, handshakes yawning etc.I only figured it out about half a year ago when i tried to make my first fulllength piece. I have improved in this field by focusing on making my animations longer, well rounded, original,
characterized and meaningful, but i still regret not doing anything longer than a couple of seconds for a long time.
Sorry if it looks messy,i am writing this on a smart phone at 2 in the morning.
