I don't give a damn how much of an asshole Mayweather is as a person. He's the best pure boxer of this generation, and has the best defence of all time. Greatest overall boxer of all time imo was Roy Jones Jr.

Rocky Marciano was the greatest of all time. The only undefeated champion boxer of any time.

Why only one? Even Mortal Kombat gives you two rounds, dude.

Plenty of undefeated fighters. Mayweather is also undefeated. So was Calzaghe, but no one calls him the greatest.

Most people blindly cite Ray Robinson as the greatest of all time, however it's obvious the overall skill level was far lower back then. Most of these people are also biased towards 20th century boxers. Rose tinted glasses. I've always found it amusing how in every sport where you can't accurately measure someone's skill, people just love to harp on about how much better fighters from the past were. If we had no way of timing Olympic sprinters, I guarantee, people would be going around preaching about how much better sprinters from 100 years ago were lol.

Why did you stop? Not enough time? Lost interest?

Not enough time and the expense. The boxing gym I went to was a two cities away from my house, and it was $100 for 4 months of lessons, not including any registration fees for tournaments. I mostly trained and participated in one junior tournament, managed to get to the semi-finals before I was dropped. It was a TKO, though. I pride myself in that I've never actually been knocked out in a fight.

Athletes always get better, not worse. Because they have more resources available to then. Once in a while, there will be freaks of nature around back then but the athlete in general only gets better.

The reason I rate Marciano higher is simple. He retired undefeated, a heavyweight, he didn't have the kind of information, nutrition and science available to modern athletes. He was a take-on-all-comers sort of dude.

But it is impossible to judge anyone at all as the greatest without setting a clear criteria before-hand.

Sounds great. I just find it sad that we have to let go of these things that were so influential in our lives (according to me anyway); which of course can sometimes be inevitable. I wonder if I will still be doing any MA in 10 years time or other commitments or unpredictable stuff start getting in the way.

He wouldn't have had the kind of training techniques, sports psychology and nutrition guidance that athletes have today.

You've actually defeated a lot of the stereotypes I've held about foreigners, Nish. This is weird but I'm drunk, but you actually proved to me that foreigners are smart, but in different ways than us americans are
