Bosses with predictable patterns who are made more difficult only by giving them a shit ton of health and damage. The entire fights ends up being one long boring grind mixed in with hoping your finger doesn't slip and you have to do it all over again.

EDIT: Items in smash are the absolute fucking worst idea ever. It's like a perfect meal with an extra sauce you never asked for that just ruins the whole meal if you put it on.

I dislike certain trial and error level design. I think Fire Emblem is especially guilty of this at times. I remember one level where I got close to a boss only for a unit to be spawned right in front of me with a Killing Edge and OHKOing one of my units. That's the kind of shit that you wouldn't know would happen unless you played that far in the level already.


I have a love/hate relationship for fetch quests. On one hand they're entertaining because you know you'll get a good reward for doing them, but on the other hand they're often insanely tedious.


I also dislike certain RPG games where you have absolutely NO idea whether a move/item/whatever will be good enough to keep/develop and you're left to make educated guesses that could end up fucking you over big time if you guess wrong long term.

Fetch quests can be okay if it's something important/rare/satisfying to attain, I hate those kinds that end up being "I'm a gardener and I want rare flower, please find main flower, I'm busy with the chance you, my only ever customer decides he wants to buy a flower. Bye!!"

Another thing I hate is bad/forced as fuck tutorials. Either it's one that takes you way to far out of its way to explain a makes you jump, or ones that make little to no effort and just force a heap of over complicated shit down your throat at once. Your only excuse to go out of your way to explain something is if you have a unique control scheme, and it takes time to get used to. Just have it on a little sign, or make it subtle, don't bring the fucking game to a screeching halt to tell me how I pull off one swing of my sword. Let me figure it out if I can or offer to explain if I need it explaining.

Bloodborne/Dark Souls backtracking is the bane of my existence

I think backtracking adds a little more depth to the game sometimes. Imo it's only good if it's used for extra content and bonuses. Like an extra area of a level that you can't acccess unless you have a certain ability from another further ahead level.

Pokemon is an example of backtracking for hidden areas etc. done correctly.

I also hate the fact when your character can't jump over a small hump on the ground, I mean if they wanted to show us that you're blocking their way going there then they should have went with a large cabinet instead.

I never played Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, but I heard that game was really notorious for it's tutorial on parrying. The tutorial in general was allegedly not very clear and you could clear the tutorial without actually learning how to parry. Once you're 3/4 in the game, parrying is actually required, and most people have stated that the game became much more fun after they learned parrying. So shit tutorials.

So two more things: I hate the new way Nintendo platformers have been going around in catering to younger audiences. I'm talking about in particular the "Gold Tanuki Suit" or "Cosmic" thing that practically does the level for you. It's so patronizing.
